Oct 16: Brazil's race tightens, and a Roadster beats a stopwatch nobody saw
Ten days before Brazil's runoff, Flávio Bolsonaro is still the favorite at 79%. But he was near 89% a few days ago, and three polls in three days put the race at about 51 to 49. What moved the market on Thursday, why traders still lean his way, and the two debates that could change it.
Plus: Tesla finally showed the new Roadster, nine years after the first unveiling, and said it hit 0 to 60 in 0.81 seconds. The market on a sub-one-second run went from about 20% to 97% overnight. The catch: reporters say no live timer was shown. And in Who Called It, Romania is one vote away from a government.

Maya: Last night Tesla said its new Roadster went from zero to sixty in zero point eight one seconds. And a market on exactly that jumped from twenty percent to ninety seven.
Daniel: One small detail. According to Jalopnik, no live timer was shown. The car was fast. The stopwatch, we're not sure.
Maya: This is The Poly Brief. It's Friday, October sixteenth. I'm Maya.
Daniel: And I'm Daniel. Every day we take the biggest moves on Polymarket, show you where the odds stand, and ask: why is the market betting this way?
Maya: Today: Brazil, ten days before the runoff, where the polls just got a lot closer. Then the Roadster. But first, a quick check on a call we made.
Who called it?
Maya: Who called it? Romania's next prime minister. On October sixth the market gave Luca Niculescu forty three percent. On Wednesday, eighty seven and a half. This morning, ninety two.
Daniel: And the deadline we told you about passed quietly. On Wednesday his biggest potential partner, the Social Democrats, voted to join, with eleven ministries. On Thursday evening he filed his program and his list of ministers in Parliament. So the Friday dissolution scenario is off the calendar.
Maya: So the market was right?
Daniel: Not over yet. The confidence vote is on Tuesday at two in the afternoon, Romania time. He needs two hundred thirty three votes. President Nicușor Dan says there's a very high probability of a government on Tuesday.
Maya: A president quoting probabilities. He'd fit right in here.
Daniel: We'll be back on Wednesday with the final count.
Story 1: Brazil
Maya: The board. Brazil's presidential runoff, on Sunday, October twenty fifth. Flávio Bolsonaro, seventy nine percent. Down four points in a day, six and a half in a week. President Lula, twenty and a half.
Daniel: After the first round we told you eighty two. Through Wednesday it sat between eighty six and eighty nine. Then on Thursday it slid all day, to a low of seventy six, and bounced back to seventy nine.
Maya: With how much money behind it?
Daniel: A hundred and eighty four million dollars traded. So, what happened? Polls. Three in three days, all pointing the same way.
Daniel: On Tuesday, PoderData had Flávio at fifty one, Lula forty nine, in valid votes. A week earlier it was fifty three to forty seven.
Daniel: On Wednesday evening, Quaest: Flávio forty six, Lula forty four. A technical tie, inside the margin of error. That same night, the Senate voted seventy five to one to end Brazil's six day work week. Reporters called it a win for Lula's government.
Maya: Seventy five to one. In this election, that's practically a lovefest.
Daniel: Flávio voted yes too, by the way. Then on Thursday, Brazilian stocks fell about one percent, and the real weakened. Forbes Brasil says investors see a Flávio win as better for the budget, and the polls made that look less certain.
Daniel: And the market low, seventy six, came in the afternoon. Before the big one: Datafolha, released Thursday evening. Fifty one for Flávio, forty nine for Lula. The gap cut in half, from four points to two. But he's still ahead. And that's when the market bounced.
Maya: So traders feared worse, and got bad but not terrible.
Maya: OK. Then why is he still at seventy nine, if the polls say fifty one forty nine?
Daniel: Reason one: he's ahead in almost every poll. Poder360 lined up ten recent ones. Flávio leads in nine. Close, but consistent.
Daniel: Reason two: the polls missed him last time. The final AtlasIntel poll before the first round had Lula up by about three. On election day, it was Flávio who came in first, forty seven to forty five. And this market jumped from sixty four to eighty two overnight.
Daniel: Reason three: the right consolidated behind him. Two eliminated candidates, Romeu Zema and Ronaldo Caiado, endorsed him the day after the vote. And in Datafolha, asked who they think will win, voters say Flávio, fifty four to thirty seven.
Maya: Quick background for anyone just joining. Flávio is Jair Bolsonaro's son?
Daniel: His eldest. A senator from Rio de Janeiro. His father was convicted of attempting a coup and is under house arrest. So the son is the family's name on the ballot.
Maya: Now the other side. What could flip it?
Daniel: First, the trend. Every poll this week is closer than the one before it. Two points is a coin flip with a margin of error. And Datafolha finished its interviews before the work week vote. So no poll has measured that yet.
Daniel: Second, there's still room to move. In Datafolha, blank ballots plus the undecided still add up to about eight percent.
Daniel: Third, debates. Or rather, the lack of them. The two haven't debated once this entire campaign. The one set for Thursday was cancelled, officially for scheduling.
Maya: A debate season with no debates. Very efficient.
Maya: What to watch. Sunday night, a debate on TV Band. Both campaigns say they'll be there. Friday the twenty third, the TV Globo debate. More polls all week. Then the runoff on the twenty fifth, with a result that same night. And on the twenty sixth, we'll see who called it.
Maya: Bottom line: the market still thinks Flávio wins. It just stopped thinking it's easy.
Daniel: And if you want the next poll explained before your coffee, hit follow. It's free, and it's faster than a Brazilian debate schedule.
Bridge
Maya: Daniel, you were ten minutes late.
Daniel: Parking. I went around the block four times. Then a spot opened, and a guy on a scooter slid into it.
Maya: A scooter took your parking spot?
Daniel: He didn't even need the whole spot. He just wanted to win.
Maya: Respect. Friday morning, no mercy.
Daniel: I'm walking next week. Or I'm getting something faster than a scooter.
Maya: Well, funny you mention that. Because last night a car tried to be faster than basically everything.
Story 2: Tesla Roadster
Maya: Story two. The board. Will the Tesla Roadster do zero to sixty in less than one second? Yes, ninety seven percent. Up seventy four points in a day.
Daniel: It spent most of Thursday around twenty. Thirty eight just before the event. And ninety seven within about an hour of it. A small market, about a hundred and thirty three thousand dollars. But it moved like a rocket.
Maya: Fitting. So what happened?
Daniel: Thursday night, outdoors, at a SpaceX test site near Waco, Texas. Tesla showed the new Roadster. First a recorded run, about one second. Then a live run. And Tesla said: zero point eight one seconds.
Daniel: How does a car do that? It cheats a little. Cold gas thrusters, like a rocket's. Ten of them, fed by about six hundred liters of compressed air, according to Tesla's engineering chief, quoted by TechCrunch. Engadget's reporter called it, quote, cheating a little bit.
Maya: A car with a rocket backpack. I feel like that should be its own category.
Daniel: Before the run, Elon Musk told the crowd, quote, success is not guaranteed. I mean that. Later the car drove up a vertical ramp, and jumped over a row of other Teslas. With a barrel roll.
Maya: So why is the market at ninety seven?
Daniel: Reason one: the claim is out there, loud and clear. Zero point eight one, from Tesla itself. Reason two: the rules say a qualifying run can be proven by the livestream, or by a consensus of credible reporting. And the outlets all report the same number. Reason three: according to Polymarket's own data, the market is already in its resolution process. Not final yet.
Maya: Quick background. Haven't we heard about this car before?
Daniel: Oh, yes. In 2017 the promise was one point nine seconds, two hundred thousand dollars, on the road in 2020. Electrek counted at least six production delays, and seven different dates for this very event.
Daniel: Now: production in 2028. Range, over three hundred miles, about half the original promise. No price yet.
Maya: So the car got much faster, and the calendar got much slower.
Maya: Now the other side. What could still make this a no?
Daniel: The fine print. The market wants a live, timed run. Demonstrated, not merely claimed. With a timer or an instrument on screen. And according to Jalopnik, no live timer was shown, and the time wasn't independently verified.
Daniel: Engadget's live blog, at nine eighteen that night: quote, it seems no one was actually timing that last demo. A minute later, the time was announced. And Electrek asks whether a one foot rollout was used. That's when the clock starts after the car is already moving.
Maya: So the question isn't whether the car is fast. It's whether anyone can prove it on camera.
Daniel: Exactly. And note: the version you can actually drive on the street is promised at under one point six seconds. The fastest one, called Rocket, is not approved for public roads.
Maya: What to watch. The resolution in the next few days, and whether anyone disputes it. The market has until October thirty first for a qualifying run. And production, if the calendar holds this time, in 2028. We'll check on Sunday who called it.
Maya: Bottom line: the market believes the stopwatch. Now it just needs someone to show it.
Close
Maya: That's The Poly Brief for this week. Every article and number is linked in the description.
Daniel: And a reminder: these odds are prices, not prophecies. Nothing here is investment advice. Flávio at seventy nine means that roughly one time in five, Lula wins.
Maya: If you enjoyed it, follow or subscribe, leave us a rating, and share it with the friend who drives like every light is a starting line.
Daniel: Have a great weekend. See you next week!
