Oct 15: One tenth of a percent moves the Fed, and Apple closes in on Nvidia

Core inflation came in one tenth of a point hotter than expected, and the odds of a Fed rate hike on October 28 jumped from about 20% to 48.5% in an hour. Then they faded back to 31.5. Why the hike looks delayed rather than cancelled: Polymarket gives a December hike 78.5%.

Plus the race for the world's most valuable company. Apple closed above $5 trillion for the first time, Nvidia fell 3%, and Apple's chances of finishing 2026 on top jumped to 25.5%, up 17 points in a week. What's moving each stock, and the two earnings reports that could flip it.

Cold open

Maya: Yesterday morning, inflation came in one tenth of a percent hotter than expected. One tenth.

Daniel: And within an hour, the odds of a Fed rate hike this month went from twenty to almost fifty. Never underestimate a decimal point.

Maya: This is The Poly Brief. It's Thursday, October fifteenth. I'm Maya.

Daniel: And I'm Daniel. Every day we take the biggest moves on Polymarket, show you where the odds stand, and ask: why is the market betting this way?

Maya: Today: the inflation report that shook the Fed market, and then calmed down. And a race at the very top of the stock market, where Apple just did something it had never done before.

Story 1: The Fed

Maya: The board. The Fed's decision on October twenty eighth. No change, sixty seven and a half percent. A quarter point hike, thirty one and a half. That's up thirteen points in a day.

Daniel: On Tuesday we told you the hike was at nineteen and a half. It sat right there until yesterday morning. Then, at one in the afternoon UTC, it jumped to forty eight and a half. And spent the rest of the day sliding back down.

Maya: And this isn't a small market.

Daniel: Almost forty million dollars traded. And the neighbors moved too. A hike at the December meeting: seventy eight and a half percent. Another hike at all in 2026: eighty six.

Maya: So what happened at one o'clock?

Daniel: Half an hour earlier, the September inflation report came out. Prices up three point seven percent from a year ago. Expected: three point six. August was three point four.

Daniel: But the number traders watch is core inflation. Without food and energy. It rose zero point three percent in a month. Eighty two percent of forecasters expected zero point two.

Maya: So the forecasters were off by a tenth, and a forty million dollar market had a small panic attack.

Daniel: Pretty much. In the rates market, according to investingLive, the October hike went from twenty one percent to forty seven right after the print. Polymarket did the same thing, a few minutes later.

Maya: Quick reminder for anyone who just joined. Why are we even talking about hikes? Isn't the Fed supposed to be cutting?

Daniel: Not this year. On September sixteenth, the Fed raised rates for the first time since July 2023. With oil pushing prices up. Gasoline is up thirty four percent from a year ago. Energy overall, up twenty.

Maya: Thirty four. Ouch.

Maya: So why is the market still at only thirty one for October?

Daniel: Reason one: within hours, Fed officials poured cold water. Mary Daly, president of the San Francisco Fed, told Reuters more hikes are probably needed. But she sees no need to act in October. Quote, there is time to decide.

Daniel: Reason two: Chicago Fed president Austan Goolsbee called the report discouraging. But he also said he doesn't want to tie his hands before a meeting. And last week, Governor Christopher Waller said the hikes don't need to come at back to back meetings.

Daniel: Reason three: December is simply a better stage. The October meeting has no new economic projections. December does. And the job market is soft. September added only twenty nine thousand jobs.

Maya: So the hike isn't cancelled. It's rescheduled.

Daniel: Like a dentist appointment. You know it's coming. You just hope it's not this month.

Maya: Now the other side. What could bring October back?

Daniel: The Fed's own Beige Book, also out yesterday. It's a survey of businesses across the country. Four of the twelve districts say price increases are picking up. In August, it was one. And diesel came up twenty one times. Last time, twice.

Maya: The Beige Book is starting to read like a truck stop menu.

Daniel: And Goolsbee said services inflation is above five percent, and tariffs and oil can't explain that. That's the kind of thing that makes a central bank want to act sooner, not later.

Daniel: And the other direction: the bond market. The two year yield touched four point nine five yesterday, then closed at four point eight one. The ten year is at five point one nine. According to Citi, some officials want to see what those borrowing costs do before hiking again.

Maya: What to watch. Today, producer prices and retail sales, both at eight thirty Eastern. Tonight, US time, Fed chair Kevin Warsh speaks at the IMF meetings in Bangkok. His last scheduled word before the quiet period starts on Saturday. Then the decision on October twenty eighth. And we'll be back the next morning to see who called it.

Maya: Bottom line: the market heard one hot number and asked if the Fed would rush. The Fed's answer, so far: not yet. December.

Daniel: And if you want to know whether Warsh agrees, hit follow. We'll read the tea leaves so you don't have to.

Bridge

Maya: Daniel, what happened to your phone?

Daniel: It fell. Face down. On the one tile in the kitchen that isn't covered by a rug.

Maya: Of course it did.

Daniel: My nephew says I should get one of those phones that folds. Then it can fall in half the space.

Maya: That's not how physics works.

Daniel: I know. But she said it with confidence.

Maya: Well, funny you mention folding phones. Because one of them may be helping a company become the most valuable on Earth.

Story 2: Largest company

Maya: Story two. The board. Which company will be the world's largest by market value on December thirty first? Nvidia, seventy one percent. Down seven and a half in a day, and sixteen and a half in a week. Apple, twenty five and a half. Up ten in a day and seventeen in a week.

Daniel: A week ago, Apple was under nine percent. Alphabet and Microsoft are under two. About eight million dollars have traded. And Apple's jump came yesterday, at the same hour as the Fed jump. One in the afternoon UTC.

Maya: Same inflation report?

Daniel: The timing matches. Yesterday Nvidia closed down three point two percent. Yahoo Finance says the hot inflation report revived fears of more hikes and higher borrowing costs, on top of worries about debt funded AI spending. The cloud company CoreWeave fell more than sixteen percent. Oracle almost nine.

Daniel: And Apple went up half a percent. And closed above five trillion dollars in market value. For the first time ever.

Maya: For the first time? I thought it already hit five trillion.

Daniel: During the day, yes. Seven times, according to 9to5Mac. Yesterday was the first time it held there until the closing bell.

Maya: Seven tries. Somebody give that stock a participation trophy.

Maya: So why is Apple suddenly a real contender?

Daniel: Reason one: the gap is melting. On October sixth, Nvidia was ahead by almost nine hundred billion dollars. By our math, after yesterday's close, it's a bit over three hundred billion. About six or seven percent.

Daniel: Reason two: in a week of rate hike fears, Apple looks like the safe one. It doesn't spend hundreds of billions on AI data centers. Nvidia is down about seven percent since last Wednesday. Apple is up about two.

Daniel: Reason three: phones. Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, opens for preorders tomorrow. At one thousand nine hundred and ninety nine dollars. According to reports from the supply chain, Apple raised its orders by about thirty percent.

Maya: Two thousand dollars for a phone that folds. Daniel, your kitchen tile is getting nervous.

Daniel: And it's happened before. In July, Apple briefly took the top spot. Nvidia had it back within two weeks.

Maya: Now the other side. Why is Nvidia still at seventy one?

Daniel: First, it's still ahead. Three hundred billion dollars is a lot of iPhones. Second, the business is booming. Revenue last quarter grew a hundred and six percent from a year earlier. And it authorized a hundred and fifty billion dollar share buyback.

Daniel: Third, Apple isn't cheap, and its own news isn't all rosy. Last week, Nikkei Asia reported component orders for the iPhone 18 Pro were cut by at least fifteen percent. Apple fell more than one percent that day. And the stock trades at more than thirty nine times its earnings.

Maya: So a gap that closed fast can open fast.

Daniel: Exactly. A move of six or seven percent between the two, in either direction, and the ranking changes. With two and a half months left, that's not a lot.

Maya: What to watch. Tomorrow, iPhone Duo preorders. November second, Apple's earnings. Nvidia reports in mid to late November. We'll check in after Apple's numbers, and on January first we'll see who called it.

Maya: Bottom line: Nvidia is still the favorite. But the market just learned that in a rate hike world, boring can be beautiful.

Close

Maya: That's The Poly Brief for today. Every article and number is linked in the description.

Daniel: And a reminder: these odds are prices, not prophecies. Nothing here is investment advice. Nvidia at seventy one means that roughly three times in ten, somebody else ends the year on top.

Maya: If this helped, follow or subscribe, leave us a rating, and send it to the friend who still calls every phone an iPhone. Now it might be true about market value too.

Daniel: We're here every morning. See you tomorrow!
