Nov 3: A strike on Qeshm, three hours of silence. And Election Day
Overnight, the US struck targets on Iran's Qeshm Island, in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media reported explosions just after midnight local time, and the market barely moved. More than three hours later, a report said the US did it, and in five minutes the bet that the pause holds through Tuesday fell from 92% to 53%. It's now 6.5%. Every date from November 4 on has already resolved No. Why "through November 2" is still at 64%, why even October 31, a date that's over, fell to 27, and what US officials call "limited defensive strikes".
Then Election Day in America. Democrats are at 75.5% for the Senate and 75.5% to take both chambers, up ten points in a week. Nate Silver's model crossed 80% for the first time. The path through North Carolina, Maine, Ohio and Texas, the polling errors that went the other way in 2016, 2020 and 2024, and the poll closing times to watch tonight. Plus a quick Who Called It: Apple and NVIDIA after Apple's earnings.

Cold open
Maya: Last night, Iranian media reported explosions on an island in the Strait of Hormuz. And for more than three hours, the market barely moved.
Daniel: Then a report said the US did it. In five minutes, the bet that the pause lasts through Tuesday went from ninety two percent to fifty three.
Maya: This is The Poly Brief. It's Tuesday, November third. I'm Maya.
Daniel: And I'm Daniel. Every day we take the biggest moves on Polymarket, show you where the odds stand, and ask: why is the market betting this way?
Maya: Today: a US strike in Iran, and Election Day in America. But first, a quick one. Who called it? Not yet.
Who Called It
Daniel: The world's largest company at the end of the year. On October fifteenth, the market gave NVIDIA seventy one percent. Two weeks later, it was fifty two, with Apple at forty five.
Daniel: Then Apple reported on Monday. Revenue beat, iPhone beat. But Apple forecast a margin drop for the holiday quarter, on memory costs. The stock slipped about three percent after hours.
Daniel: This morning: NVIDIA sixty two and a half. Apple thirty five. Not over. We'll be back on New Year's Day.
Maya: So Apple beat the estimates and lost ten points. Tough crowd.
Story 1: Iran
Maya: Story one. The board. Polymarket asks: does the pause between the US and Iran hold through a given date? Through Tuesday, November third: six and a half percent.
Daniel: Through Monday, November second: sixty three point seven. Down thirty four in a day. And every date from November fourth on has already resolved no.
Maya: So what happened?
Daniel: On Monday afternoon Eastern time, Iranian state media reported explosions on Qeshm Island. That's just after midnight, local time. Qeshm is the big island in the Strait of Hormuz.
Daniel: Later, citing US officials, The Wall Street Journal reported that the US struck the island. A US official called them defensive strikes, against Iranians using surface to air missiles against US assets.
Daniel: CBS spoke to three officials. Their words: limited defensive strikes. One said the trigger was the Revolutionary Guard firing at an American aircraft. No casualties have been reported.
Maya: And Iran?
Daniel: The Revolutionary Guard says it shot down three US drones on Monday. The US hasn't confirmed. And no Iranian strike in response has been reported.
Maya: So why did the market take three hours?
Daniel: We opened the price history. The first report of explosions we found went out about a quarter past four in the afternoon, Eastern. The market barely moved.
Daniel: At seven forty in the evening, it broke. The bet on Tuesday went from ninety two to fifty three in five minutes, and under five within the hour. That was minutes before the first report of the Journal's story that we found.
Maya: So explosions alone weren't enough. The market waited for someone to say: it was us.
Daniel: Exactly. Explosions in Iran can be many things. The rules count only a strike by the US, from the air or with missiles, that hits Iranian land.
Maya: But here's what I don't get. Why is Monday still at sixty four? And why did October thirty first move at all? That date is over.
Daniel: Number one: the clock. Monday's bet ends at midnight, Iran time. The explosions were reported just after midnight. So it probably counts for Tuesday. Probably.
Daniel: Number two: a line in the Journal's report. The paper called this the latest in a series of limited strikes in recent weeks, that the US kept quiet.
Daniel: If one of those hit Iranian land before October thirty first, that bet loses too. So it fell from ninety six to twenty seven. Then it climbed back to seventy eight, because nobody has put a date on an earlier strike.
Maya: So traders were re-pricing the past.
Daniel: A bit of background. The war started on February twenty eighth. There's been a US blockade on Iran since April. And on October eighth, Trump said the US will not be attacking Iran before the midterms.
Maya: And the strike came on election eve.
Daniel: It did. US officials say it was defensive, and not a return to major combat.
Maya: The other side. Is this the end of the pause, or a one-off?
Daniel: For a one-off: both sides kept it small. On Monday, Trump said: we had a war with Iran, we won. Asked if he'd strike after the midterms, he said no.
Daniel: And on Truth Social: Iran wants a settlement, as soon as possible. It could happen. A Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran on Monday evening. The draft, per a diplomat: Iran reopens the strait, in return for sanctions relief.
Daniel: Against that: the Times of Israel reports Netanyahu is pressing for strikes after the midterms. And Brent crude rose half a percent overnight, to about a hundred and five dollars.
Daniel: One more thing. The Washington Examiner called these the first US attacks on Iran in two months. The Journal says a series in recent weeks. Only one of those is true. And that's exactly what the October bet hangs on.
Maya: What to watch. Whether the strike is counted for Monday or Tuesday, and whether the October date gets disputed. And talks: another round is possible in the coming days.
Maya: Bottom line: six and a half percent says the pause is over. Sixty four for Monday says the market is now arguing about the clock.
Daniel: If you want this every morning, before the coffee kicks in, hit follow.
Bridge
Maya: Daniel, why is there a sticker on your laptop that says I voted?
Daniel: My cousin in Ohio sent me a pack. He voted early and got too many.
Maya: So you're wearing someone else's civic pride.
Daniel: I'm borrowing it. I'll give it back on Wednesday.
Maya: Well, today a lot of people get the real one.
Story 2: Election Day
Maya: Story two. The board. Who wins the Senate? Democrats: seventy five and a half percent. Up four in a day, up ten in a week.
Daniel: Democrats taking both chambers, the House and the Senate: also seventy five and a half. The House alone: ninety four and a half.
Maya: And what did we say?
Daniel: On October twenty first, we had the Senate at sixty four and a half. On Sunday, seventy two and a half. It's been climbing all month.
Maya: Why?
Daniel: Number one: the forecasters. On Monday, Nate Silver's model gave Democrats eighty point one percent for the Senate. He says it's the first time it started with an eight. Another model, from the site Race to the White House, is at seventy nine.
Daniel: So the market is a few points behind the models. Not ahead of them.
Daniel: Number two: the map. Republicans hold fifty three seats. Democrats need to gain four. In North Carolina, Roy Cooper leads in the last three polls by nine to fourteen points. In Maine, the Democrat, Jackson, leads Susan Collins in every poll on the list.
Daniel: In Ohio, Sherrod Brown is ahead by three to five. And in Texas, the market gives James Talarico seventy four and a half. That's four.
Daniel: Number three: turnout. By Saturday night, about fifty two point seven million Americans had voted early. A midterm record. In twenty twenty two, it was forty five point nine million.
Maya: And all that, after about eleven billion dollars in ads, spent or booked. The most expensive campaign in US history, just above twenty twenty four.
Maya: The other side.
Daniel: First, history. According to Silver Bulletin, the polls overestimated Democrats in twenty sixteen, by about three points. In twenty twenty, by almost five. In twenty twenty four, by almost three.
Daniel: Silver himself says Texas, Ohio, Alaska and Maine are each just a normal-sized polling error away from flipping.
Daniel: Second, Michigan. On Sunday, Democratic congresswoman Haley Stevens, who lost the primary, endorsed the Republican, Mike Rogers. The market still gives the Democrat, Abdul El-Sayed, eighty and a half.
Maya: So seventy five and a half is: the polls point one way, and the polls have been wrong in that exact direction before.
Maya: What to watch tonight, Eastern time. Georgia closes at seven. North Carolina and Ohio at seven thirty. Maine, most of Michigan and most of Texas at eight. Iowa and Nebraska at nine. Alaska, midnight and one.
Daniel: And if nobody in Alaska passes fifty percent, the ranked choice count waits until November eighteenth. So the Senate may not be called tonight. We'll be back with who called it.
Maya: Bottom line: the market says Democrats, three times in four. The one time in four is the polling error everyone remembers.
Close
Maya: That's The Poly Brief. Every article and number is linked in the description.
Daniel: And a reminder: these odds are prices, not prophecies. Nothing here is investment advice. Seventy five and a half percent for Democrats in the Senate still means about one time in four, Republicans keep it.
Maya: If this helped, follow or subscribe, leave us a rating, and send it to the friend who'll be refreshing results at two in the morning.
Daniel: We're here every morning. Tomorrow, the results. See you tomorrow!
