Somebody explain.",{"speaker":19,"text":119},"Here's the case traders are making. Reason one: the first round. On October fourth, it was Flávio who came in first. Forty seven percent to Lula's forty five. About two point two million votes ahead.",{"speaker":19,"text":121},"Reason two: the polls got Flávio wrong last time. According to Congresso em Foco, the national polls underestimated Flávio by about three points on average in the first round. And in twenty twenty two, they underestimated his father, Jair Bolsonaro, by more than four.",{"speaker":18,"text":123},"So if they miss by three again...",{"speaker":19,"text":125},"Then a two point lead is not a coin flip. Datafolha ran a turnout model for the first time. The election watchdog CRTA found that about three quarters of political airtime on national broadcasters went to the authorities. International observers from the OSCE have warned about pressure on voters.",{"speaker":19,"text":201},"Reason three: the students' own weak spots. Analysts at the German Marshall Fund point out they have no single leader, no party structure, and they depend on people who don't usually vote.",{"speaker":19,"text":203},"And the ballot itself is crowded. N1 counted sixteen lists. One of them is called Dad, This Is for You.",{"speaker":18,"text":205},"I'm sure Dad is very proud.",{"speaker":18,"text":207},"The other side. What makes the students come first?",{"speaker":19,"text":209},"First: the polls disagree with each other. The CRTA poll in July had the students ahead by about nine. NSPM in September: students forty four, Vučić's party forty two. Only some pollsters have Vučić clearly in front.",{"speaker":18,"text":211},"So in Serbia, the question isn't what the polls say. It's which poll you read.",{"speaker":19,"text":213},"Pretty much. Second: turnout. About six and a half million people are on the voter roll. An analyst at BIRODI, a Serbian research group, argued that if more than about four point two million people vote, the government is in trouble. That's his claim, not a law of nature. But high turnout is what the students are counting on.",{"speaker":19,"text":215},"Third: one list against many. The market asks which single list wins the most seats. The students are running as one list. Some of the government's allies, like the Socialist Party, are running separately.",{"speaker":19,"text":217},"And the accusations go both ways. Vučić says the students are funded from abroad, which they deny. And a protester at the students' final rally told Reuters the system cheats people, spies on them and beats them. And the voter roll is in dispute. An audit is due on October twenty eighth. After the vote.",{"speaker":18,"text":219},"What to watch. Polls close at eight in the evening in Belgrade. First projections usually come about two hours later. CRTA has more than two thousand observers out today. And there's a presidential election coming too, by late December. We'll be back tomorrow to see who called it.",{"speaker":18,"text":221},"Bottom line: the market is betting on incumbency. The students are betting on turnout.
