And then Brazil, sixteen days before the runoff.",{"scene":89},"Story 1: Nobel Peace Prize",{"speaker":18,"text":91},"The board. Who wins the Nobel Peace Prize today. Yulia Navalnaya, nineteen percent. Up fourteen points in one day, and fifteen in a week. Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms, fifteen. Mykola Kuleba, twelve and a half. The International Court of Justice, six. Save the Children, five.",{"speaker":19,"text":93},"About two and a half million dollars traded here in the last day. And one more thing about that board. Did something happen to her?",{"speaker":19,"text":97},"That's the odd part. We checked. Nothing we could find. No new report, no leak, no statement from a Nobel watcher. And then, overnight, it jumped.",{"speaker":18,"text":99},"So who's buying?",{"speaker":19,"text":101},"Nobody knows. But I can tell you what we do know. Reason one to be careful: this market is thin. On September nineteenth, Save the Children hit thirty one percent on Polymarket, while Kalshi, a different prediction market, had it at twelve. Then it fell right back. And if you look at Navalnaya's hourly chart overnight, at one point it even shows more than fifty percent, before dropping to eleven. That's not a crowd making up its mind. That's a few trades in an empty room.",{"speaker":18,"text":103},"Hm. So the nineteen is not a forecast.",{"speaker":19,"text":105},"Maybe not. But reason two to pay attention: last year. In twenty twenty five, María Corina Machado went from under four percent to almost seventy three, in the two hours before the announcement. And she won. The Norwegian Nobel Institute investigated, and in February said that a cyberattack was the most likely source of a leak. They couldn't say who did it.",{"speaker":18,"text":107},"So every late spike in this market now makes people nervous. Both ways.",{"speaker":19,"text":109},"Exactly. A spike can mean someone knows. Or it can mean nothing. Last year it meant something.",{"speaker":18,"text":111},"Quick background for anyone just joining. Who is Navalnaya?",{"speaker":19,"text":113},"She's the widow of Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who died in an Arctic prison in twenty twenty four. She has kept his campaign going. And she's been one of the leading names in this market for weeks, around five to seven percent.",{"speaker":18,"text":115},"Now the other side. What do the experts say?",{"speaker":19,"text":117},"The Peace Research Institute Oslo publishes its own list every year. This year's has five entries, in no order. Mykola Kuleba and Save the Children, for rescuing Ukrainian children taken by Russia. Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms, volunteer networks that bring aid in a war zone. The Committee to Protect Journalists. The International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. And the International Space Station.",{"speaker":18,"text":119},"The space station.",{"speaker":19,"text":121},"For cooperation between rivals. And Navalnaya is not on that list.",{"speaker":19,"text":123},"Second, nobody outside the committee really knows. There are two hundred eighty seven candidates, two hundred eight people and seventy nine organizations. The names stay secret for fifty years. So a list like PRIO's is an educated guess, not a leak. And the favorite doesn't always win.",{"speaker":18,"text":125},"What to watch. The announcement is today, Friday, at eleven in Oslo. Noon in Israel. The committee chair, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, reads the name. The ceremony is on December tenth. And on Sunday, we'll tell you who called it.",{"speaker":18,"text":127},"Bottom line: a nineteen percent favorite that nobody can explain, in a thin market. It's free, and we don't take long.",{"scene":131},"Story 2: Brazil",{"speaker":18,"text":133},"Story two. Brazil. The runoff is on October twenty fifth, and the board says: Flávio Bolsonaro, nearly eighty six percent. Lula, thirteen and a half.",{"speaker":19,"text":135},"A week ago, Flávio was around sixty. That's a twenty five point jump. But look closer. Almost all of it happened in one night, the first round, last Sunday. The price was about sixty three percent on the morning of the vote, and about eighty five by the next day. Since then it has barely moved. About a hundred seventy eight million dollars have traded on this one market.",{"speaker":18,"text":137},"Right. We covered this on Monday. What's new since then?",{"speaker":19,"text":139},"Polls. The first ones after the first round. Datafolha, the biggest Brazilian pollster, asked about two and a half thousand people on Tuesday to Thursday. Flávio forty nine percent, Lula forty five. Counting only valid votes, fifty two to forty eight. Another poll, PoderData, has fifty three to forty seven. A week earlier, it had it at fifty fifty.",{"speaker":18,"text":141},"And why does the market buy it?",{"speaker":19,"text":143},"Reason one: the first round itself. Flávio won it with forty seven percent of the valid votes, and Lula had just over forty five. Two million votes apart. And the last Datafolha before the vote had Lula ahead. So the polls were wrong, and in Flávio's favor.",{"speaker":19,"text":145},"Reason two: the people who voted for someone else. About eight percent of voters picked other candidates. In Datafolha, those voters split forty six percent for Flávio, thirty two for Lula, and fifteen percent say blank or null. And this week, Augusto Cury, who came third, endorsed Flávio. So did two other first-round candidates, Caiado and Zema. And two big blocs in Congress: Republicanos, and União Brasil with PP.",{"speaker":19,"text":147},"Reason three: the rejection numbers. Forty six percent say they'd never vote for Lula. Forty three say that about Flávio. And one in four of Flávio's voters say they picked him mainly to beat Lula.",{"speaker":19,"text":149},"Also: the Brazilian stock index closed at a record on Monday. And Trump called the first round a big victory for Flávio.",{"speaker":18,"text":151},"Quick background. Who is Flávio?",{"speaker":19,"text":153},"Jair Bolsonaro's eldest son. A senator for Rio since twenty nineteen. His father is in prison, sentenced to twenty seven years over the coup plot, and he can't run. So the family picked Flávio.",{"speaker":18,"text":155},"Now the other side. What does Lula have?",{"speaker":19,"text":157},"First, the margin. Datafolha says fifty two to forty eight, with a margin of error of two points. Statistically, that's close to a tie. Second, the pool of people who didn't vote. Abstention was twenty one percent. Thirty three million people stayed home, the most since nineteen ninety eight. Lula is the incumbent, and getting those voters out is the one thing both campaigns will fight over.",{"speaker":19,"text":159},"Third, history. In twenty twenty two, Bolsonaro trailed in the first round and still narrowed the gap in the runoff. And one more: the polls missed once already. If Lula fixes his turnout, they could miss in the other direction.",{"speaker":18,"text":161},"Mm. But the market doesn't think so.",{"speaker":19,"text":163},"No. At eighty six percent, the market says about one time in seven, Lula still wins.",{"speaker":18,"text":165},"What to watch. The Band debate on October eighteenth. More polls. And the runoff, on Sunday, October twenty fifth. We'll come back on Monday the twenty sixth, to see who called it.",{"speaker":18,"text":167},"Bottom line: the market isn't betting on a surprise. It's betting that the first round was the real poll. We'll find out in sixteen days.",{"scene":169},"Close",{"speaker":18,"text":171},"That's The Poly Brief for today. Every poll, article and number from this episode is linked in the description.",{"speaker":19,"text":173},"And a reminder: these odds are prices, not prophecies. Nothing here is investment advice.
